DESCRIPTION:July 16\, Thursday\, 6:30 – 9 p.m. Chimney Swift Watch in Kalona. Bring your lawn chair and join our gathering to watch the Chimney Swifts descend into a roost site in Kalona. We expect 200-400 swifts.  \nTo carpool\, meet at 6:30 at the north end of the Menards parking lot\, 2605 Naples Avenue SW\, Iowa City. We’ll caravan to the Evan Gingerich farm to see two Chimney Swift nesting towers and learn more about swifts. Then we’ll drive two miles to Pleasantview Home\, 811 3rd St.\, Kalona\, and set up our lawn chairs at 8 p.m. and count the swifts as they fly into their roost.

DESCRIPTION:Hawk Watch at Lake Macbride State Park. *** New location on the Lake Macbride dam\, which offers a panoramic view of the Coralville Reservoir\, Lake Macbride\, and surrounding woods. We’ll watch for migrating raptors including Broad-winged Hawk\, Sharp-shinned Hawk\, Cooper’s Hawk\, and Osprey. Bring a lawn chair and a spotting scope if you have one.  \nDirections: from Solon\,take Main Street/Hwy. 382 west to its end at Lake Macbride State Park; at the T intersection turn right (sign: Spillway Waterfall) and then right again (sign: Fisheries Station). Go past the boat ramp to the parking lot at the end of the road. Walk south across the lawn and down the steps to the dam.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Riverwalk Trail
DESCRIPTION:Riverwalk Trail near the Coralville Reservoir Dam  4103 Prairie Du Chien Road NE\, Iowa City. This is a flat\, paved\, short (0.4 mile) trail through the woods along the Iowa River\, just downstream from the dam. It offers opportunities for waterbirds and forest birds\, and our target birds include eagles\, pelicans\, other waterbirds\, migrating songbirds\, and resident birds such as woodpeckers. This is a good walk for beginning birders\, and we’ll aim for a slower pace than other bird walks. \n Meet leader Linda Rudolph at the Devonian Fossil Gorge parking area.

Please consider helping out with one of our education stations or guided bird walks. Last year’s attendance was huge! 1800 people enjoyed learning about conservation and our natural world.
